Hyrox® is the affordable yet intense competition that blends endurance and functional strength, capable of attracting professional and amateur athletes from all over the world. But what really is HYROX® and why is it becoming one of the most watched sports formats of the moment?
We have gathered everything you need to know about this new global fitness trend.
What is HYROX®?
A new frontier of competitive fitness
HYROX® is an indoor race involving 8 km of running, interspersed with eight functional exercises. Each kilometer is completed with a new test, in a codified circuit that remains the same in each race, ensuring standardization and fair comparison among athletes.
Who invented HYROX®?
From Germany to a global phenomenon
HYROX® was born in 2017 from an idea by Christian Toetzke, one of the world’s best-known mass sports event organizers, in collaboration with Moritz Fürste, a three-time Olympic medalist and world champion field field hockey player. The goal: to create an accessible, yet intense competition to test strength and endurance at all levels.
How is a HYROX® competition structured?

The “standard” training
A HYROX® circuit involves:
- 1000 m ski erg
- 50 m sled push
- 50 m sled pull
- 80 m burpee broad jumps
- 1000 m rowing
- 200 m kettlebell farmer’s carry
- 100 m sandbag lunges
- 75-100 wall balls
Each exercise is interspersed with 1 km of running, so in total, you will have to run 8 km and do 8 workouts.
How is a HYROX® event timed?
Technology for maximum transparency
Each athlete receives an ankle chip that records:
- Total time
- Partial times of each run
- Timing of functional exercises
Timing is automatic and data can be viewed online after the event. The race number is written on the arm upon arrival at the venue.
Who can participate in HYROX®?
Ages 16 and up: an experience for everyone
HYROX® is designed to be inclusive, accessible and challenging for anyone, regardless of age or experience level. Anyone 16 years of age or older can participate, choosing from a variety of race modes based on their background and goals.
Available categories:
- Open
Ideal for those who are first-time exercisers or want to tackle the competition with manageable intensity. The weights used are reduced compared to the Pro category. - Pro
For athletes who are advanced or already used to intense training. Loads and distances are maximal, designed for those who want to seriously test themselves or aim to qualify for the World Championships. - Doubles (Doubles)
Race in pairs (male, female or mixed), with the functional exercises divided between the two athletes, while both run the full 8 km together. This is a perfect formula for those who want to share the experience with a partner, friend or colleague. - Relay (Team Relay)
Formations of four athletes (male, female or mixed), in which each component takes care of 2 km of running and 2 workouts. This is the most collaborative mode, perfect for corporate, box or sports teams who want to compete as a team and have fun.
Because HYROX® is truly for everyone:
- You don’t need to be super trained: just start and adapt your training according to your condition.
- The distinct categories allow each athlete to find his or her own size.

How long does a HYROX® competition last?
Average times and top performance
The average duration is about 90 minutes. Experienced athletes can finish the circuit in less than an hour, while for novices it can reach 2 hours and more.
HYROX® vs CrossFit®: what are the differences?
Standard vs. variety
Although often compared, HYROX® and CrossFit® have fundamental differences:
- HYROX® has a fixed structure; CrossFit® varies each workout
- HYROX® is accessible to all; CrossFit® can be more technical and complex
- HYROX® focuses on functional strength, CrossFit® on specific skills
- The risk of injury in HYROX® is lower due to the simplicity of the movements
The beauty of HYROX® is that you don’t have to be a champion to feel part of something great.
How to prepare for HYROX®?
- Training and nutrition: building a winning strategy
Preparing for a HYROX® race requires smart programming, combining functional training, running and recovery care. You don’t have to be a professional athlete, but you do need consistency, progression and attention to your body. Here are the main aspects to take care of: - Plan ahead
Start at least 12 weeks before the race, especially if it is your first participation. Break the period down into progressive training cycles: base, intensification and finish. - Train all segments of the
Alterna race run (preferably on a race-like surface) with key exercises such as sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rower, ski erg, sandbag lunges, kettlebell carry and wall balls. Also incorporate combination circuits to simulate transition fatigue. - Integrate strength and mobility
Work on fundamental strength exercises such as squats, deadlifts, push presses, and planks to enhance performance. Add stretching sessions, joint mobility and muscle relaxation to avoid injury and improve recovery. - Don’t neglect recovery
Rest is an integral part of training. Incorporate active recovery days, stretching sessions, foam rolling, and also consider complementary activities such as yoga or breathing techniques. - Targeted nutrition
Follow a balanced, nutrient-rich diet: favor complex carbohydrates (brown rice, oats, sweet potatoes), lean protein (chicken, eggs, legumes) and good fats (EVO oil, avocados, nuts). Care for hydration before, during, and after workouts. - Useful supplements
Based on individual needs and the advice of a professional, consider using: - Whey protein, to support post-workout protein synthesis
- BCAAs, to improve muscle recovery
- Creatine, to increase strength and endurance in explosive exercises
- Training for HYROX® means building physical and mental endurance, learning to manage effort and push beyond your limits, always safely.
What are the benefits of HYROX® training?
A complete workout for body and mind
HYROX® is not just a competition: it is a complete functional training method capable of involving every aspect of fitness. Through the balanced combination of running and functional movements, it brings concrete and measurable benefits, both physically and mentally.
Here are the main benefits:
- 💪 Improved cardiovascular endurance
Consistently alternating between running and workout stimulates the cardiovascular system like few other sports, strengthening the heart, improving lung capacity, and increasing overall efficiency in effort management. - 💥 Increased muscle strength and endurance
Exercises such as sled pushes, kettlebell carries, sandbag lunges or wall balls involve all major muscle groups. HYROX® helps you build “functional” strength, useful not only in competition but in everyday life. - 🧠 Mental resilience
The regular and challenging sequence of tests teaches how to handle fatigue, develops concentration and trains the mind to overcome perceived limitations. Mental training as much as physical. - 🔥 High caloric expenditure
A HYROX® training session can burn between 500 and 1000 kcal, depending on the intensity and level of the athlete. Also a powerful ally in body recomposition and slimming programs.
HYROX® is not just training, it is transformation: physical, mental and motivational.

What tools are needed for HYROX®?
The right equipment to meet the challenge
To best approach a HYROX® event-or even to train specifically-it is important to know the equipment needed. Each piece of equipment is chosen to replicate functional, accessible yet effective movements that engage the body as a whole.
Here is the basic HYROX® equipment:
- Kettlebells
Used for resistance exercises such as farmer’s carry, they stimulate grip, core, shoulder and leg muscles. - Sandbag
Lunge sandbags test balance, coordination and strength. The unstable load of the sandbag trains deep muscles and improves stability. - Sled push and sled pull sleds
A strength and power training classic. Sleds simulate fundamental push and pull movements, increasing strength, explosiveness and endurance. - Ropes (for sled pull)
They activate the upper body, particularly the lats, biceps and core, improving functional strength and motor control. - Ski erg and rowing machine
Two essential pieces of equipment for developing cardio-respiratory endurance, but also for training arms, back and legs harmoniously. - Medicine/wall balls
Used in the final workout of the race, wall balls are perfect for testing power, coordination and aerobic capacity under fatigue.
Equipment matters, so choose professional equipment.
What kit do I need for a HYROX® event?
Clothing and shoes make a difference
No technical equipment is necessary: all that is needed is breathable clothing and running shoes.
CrossFit® shoes are not ideal for long runs, while you need models with good cushioning and firm grip for exercises such as sled push. Some athletes choose sweatbands and lightweight clothing to combat indoor heat.
Is HYROX® safe? Here’s why yes.
Safe training, if done judiciously
As in any sport, risk exists, but HYROX® is considered low-impact. The simplicity of the movements makes it safe even for novices.
The main risks come from rushed preparation, particularly for running. It is important to gradually increase volumes and use appropriate shoes.
What is Roxzone?
A decisive transition
The Roxzone is the space between the running track and the functional stations. Although it may seem like just a transition zone, the Roxzone is an integral part of the track and can significantly affect the final time, especially in high-level races.
Who are the HYROX® world champions?
The protagonists of the international scene
The 2024 world champion in the men’s category is Alexander Roncevic, and the women’s champion is Megan Jacoby.
Are there championship races and prize money?
Yes, and they are very coveted
Each season ends with the HYROX® World Championship, which is entered by qualification. The best athletes compete in the Elite 15 category, which is live-streamed. Prize money can be as high as $75,000, with trials on Pro category weights.

How many HYROX® competitions are there in the world and how to register?
